Skin Conditions

Acne

Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the US.  Although it is most often thought of as a teenage ailment, acne can affect people well into adulthood.

There are two main types of acne - inflammatory acne and non-inflammatory acne.

Inflammatory acne is usually associated with sensitivity or pain and occurs due to a hormonal imbalance that leads to congestion in the skin’s follicles.  Excess androgens or insufficient estrogens increase sebum production by the sebaceous gland, which further stimulates increased desquamation of dead cells from follicle walls.  The sebum and dead skin cells combine to clog, or congest the follicles.  When the follicles are congested with excess sebum, dead skin cells, and other debris, the bacteria that cause acne flourish, causing inflammation and a blemish or breakout.

Non-inflammatory acne is not normally associated with pain, and takes place when collections of dead cells and oil clog the follicles.  It’s source isn’t due to an internal imbalance, but due to external factors including dirt, debris, environmental factors, and softtenogonic products.

While acne is a complex skin issue that is further complicated by the multitude of factors that cause it, one thing is universally true - no one likes acne!  Another equally apparent truth is that the enemy of acne is balanced skin.  Whether that means optimal  pH and hormone levels in the epidermis or a clean surface, balanced skin is less susceptible to blemishes and breakouts.

Softt beauty skincare does not specialize in acne treatments, but it does specialize in balancing skin treatments that lead to a healthy, balanced complexion.  In order to combat acne and reduce the frequency and intensity of breakouts, a balanced complexion is key.  This means proper moisture balance, pH, sebaceous gland activity, and more.  unique line of products promotes balance in your skin to reduce the severity of acne with proper hydration, nourishment, and protection.

Aging

Aging is a constant battle!  We’re all getting older, and after our twenties, none of us want to look like it.  Until we find the fountain of youth, it’s a struggle everyone will have to endure.

But what exactly is aging?  And is there anything we do about it?

There are two types of aging - intrinsic aging and extrinsic aging.

Intrinsic aging takes place due to the natural degeneration of collagen, elastin, and skin cells within the body.  It begins in the twenties, and worsens the older you get.  Skin cells become less efficient at producing collagen and elastin, two fibers that contribute to skin elasticity and durability.  As the levels of these fibers decreases, the skin becomes thinner, less elastic, less durable, and more susceptible to gravity, resulting in sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and other age signs.

Extrinsic aging takes place due to external factors.  The main culprit of external aging is the sun.  UV rays from the sun damage skin cells, decreasing their production of collagen and elastin while also inhibiting their rate of regeneration.  Other external factors include smoking, illness, and poor nutrition.  Combined with the intrinsic aging process, further age-signs develop.

Is there anything we can do to stop the aging process?

In a word, no.  There is nothing anyone can do to completely stop the aging process.  Nonetheless, Softtbeauty Skincare believes in aging gracefully, and there are many things everyone can do to prevent, even reverse, aging in the skin.  How?

First, stimulate skin cells.  For instance, Softtbeauty Hyaluronic Acid Serum infuses the skin with the moisture it needs for skin cells to remain optimally active.  This means increased collagen and elastin production for smoother, less wrinkled, younger-looking skin.

Second, protect the skin.  In addition to a sunscreen, protect the skin from damaging free radicals and other environmental factors that cause extrinsic aging.  The antioxidant power of Softtbeauty Vitamin C Serum is a great way to do so.

Third, nourish the skin.  Proper skin health and collagen production depends on proper nourishment, so treat your skin to the nourishing essential oils in Dermalogica Multi-Active Night Creme.

Like we said, we haven’t found the fountain of youth, but we might have the next best thing.  Age gracefully with Softtbeauty Skincare.

Inflamatory Acne

Inflammatory Acne

Inflammatory acne includes red-colored blemishes, pimples (papules and pustules, also referred to as zits), and nodules (large, deep, swollen, and tender lesions).  Often associated with pain, it is associated with severe acne cases and is often more difficult to control.

Inflammatory acne can be broken down into three main categories:

  • Papules - Papules are closed comedones that swell up and become red due to inflammation.  Often having a rough appearance and texture on the skin, they appear on the face as well as the rest of the body.  They develop when the hair follicle wall breaks and caves in.  As white blood cells rush to the area to fight bacteria, visible inflammation and redness develops.

  • Pustules - Pustules are closed comedones that become inflamed and ruptures, forming pustular heads of different sizes.  Primarily referred to as zits or pimples, they are visible for days after the formation of papules due to white blood cells rushing to the skin’s surface.  Pustules can be large, painful, and tender.  Treat pustules with care to avoid scarring and promote proper healing.

  • Nodules - Nodules are large, deep, and tender acne lesions that rupture under the skin and are often painful; untreated, nodules often lead to deep acne scars.  Also known as cystic acne, this is the most severe form of inflammatory acne and is associated with extreme tenderness and pain.  Cystic acne forms deep beneath the surface of the skin.  White blood cells, oil, and fluids build up to form pus-filled sacs, called cysts.  When the bottom of a follicle breaks, it forms a nodule, or a large, sore bump on the face.  Nodules go deep into the skin, making recovery difficult and scarring a possibility.  Early treatment is key for cystic acne and nodules.

As with all acne, inflammatory acne is due to an imbalance in the skin.  Promote your skin’s balance for a clearer complexion with one of the amazing Softtbeauty products.  And see a dermatologist for targeted acne treatments.

Non-Inflamatory Acne

There are two main types of acne lesions, inflammatory and non-inflammatory.  Non-inflammatory acne refers to whiteheads and blackheads, also known as closed comedones and open comedones.  Comedones are oil producing hair follicles that get filled with debris, dead skin cells, excess oil, or other impurities to develop into visible lesions.  Along with papules and pustules, these lesions are called papulopustular acne.  The most severe form of non-inflammatory acne is called nodular acne.

Open comedones, or blackheads, form when a plug develops from oil and dead skin cells in a hair follicle.  As the plug dilates and enlarges, the hair follicle pore remains open, exposing a black plug, hence the term blackhead.  While it is commonly thought that the black part is dirt inside the pore, this is not the case.  The black part is actually oil inside the pore that turns black when exposed to outside air.  Blackheads are small, last a long time, and cannot be washed away.

Closed comedones, or whiteheads, form when the same process occurs but the hair follicle remains closed or is very narrow.  Because the excess oil in the clogged pore is not exposed to outside air, it remains white.  The trapped sebum and bacteria remain below the skin, causing an infection in the area.  This appears as either a whitehead or a pink bump on the surface of the skin due to inflammation.

The key to dealing with non-inflammatory acne is cleanliness and balance.  This doesn’t sapping the skin of moisture, which only leads to increased sebaceous gland activity and over-production of pore-clogging.  Instead it means eliminating debris, excess oil, dead skin cells while promoting moisture balance.  A great way to restore optimum moisture balance in the skin is with an oil-free moisturizer, like Softtbeauty Hyaluronic Acid Serum.

Dehydration

One of the skin’s most vital functions is to conserve water, acting as a semi-permeable, moisture barrier between the inside of your body and the surrounding environment.  Proper water conservation in the body, thus, depends on the skin.  That’s a tough job, especially when one considers the abuse the skin constantly undergoes from the outside world.

The skin itself is 75% water.  Water moves throughout the body to serve internal needs, moving to the skin in a process called transepidermal water loss.  Healthy skin maintains just the right levels to remain plump, firm, and well-hydrated.

Dry, dehydrated skin, then, is the result of two causes.  On the one hand, it can be caused by a lack of internal water, which causes the skin to become dry and brittle.  That’s why it’s so important to drink enough water every day.  On the other hand, it can be caused by external factors, such as an arid environment, physical stress, or other environmental factors.  Such factors suck vital moisture from the skin, leaving it damaged, prone to breakdown, and easily infected.

Most of us have dealt with dry skin in one way or another, so we know how uncomfortable it can be.  Whether you’ve had dry, chapped lips or peeling skin following a sunburn, dehydrated skin is never fun.

Softtbeauty Skincare is provides you with a number of options to heal dry, dehydrated skin and prevent the moisture loss that leads to skin damage.  Softtbeauty Hyaluronic Acid Serum uses hyaluronic acid, a compound capable of bonding to up to 1000 times its weight in water, to infuse all layers of the skin down to the dermis with rich, nourishing moisture.  At the same time, it works to fortify the skin’s natural barriers to lock that moisture in for lasting benefits.  Softtbeauty Vitamin C Serum similarly features the power of hyaluronic acid.  Finally, Softtbeauty Multi-Active Night Creme is a creamy, moisturizing treatment that works all night to restore your skin’s moisture.

If you deal with dry, dehydrated skin that is constantly cracking or irritated, don’t lose hope. Softtbeauty Skincare truly can restore balance to your complexion so you can say goodbye to dry forever!

Pigmentation

What is it?

Hyper-pigmentation is a localized increase in the natural color of the skin.  Most often due to over-exposure to the sun, it is a common condition that becomes increasingly prevalent as we age.  Usually harmless, hyper-pigmentation results from increased melanin deposits in a particular area of the skin.  These areas are often called age spots or liver spots and most commonly occur on the face and hands.

Another potential cause of hyper-pigmentation includes hormonal changes, such as those that occur during pregnancy, when using birth control, or during menopause.  In these cases, the highly pigmented areas are usually a bit larger than when caused by the sun and are called melasma spots.

Other causes of pigmentation exist, but the treatment regimen is the same.

What can be done about it?

As with many other age-signs, some pigmentation is unavoidable.  It’s the natural result of aging.  That being said, Softtbeauty Skincare is committed to helping you age gracefully, and there are thing that can be done to prevent pigmentation issues.

First, protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun.  Always use sunscreen when sun exposure is a possibility.

Second, nourish your skin.  As you grow older, your skin cells become less active, and the skin’s natural desquamation and regeneration process slows, leading to more severe pigmentation issues.  Exfoliate regularly to promote skin cell proliferation, and nourish your skin with the hydration it needs to enhance skin cell activity with Softtbeauty Hyaluronic Acid Serum.  The healthier your skin is, the less likely you are to suffer from pigmentation issues.

Third, treat your hyper-pigmentation.  Softtbeauty Multi-Active Night Cream features active ingredients that lift away age spots for a more even complexion.  At the same time, natural botanicals and vitamin C brighten the skin for a uniformly brilliant complexion.

Rosocea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a dermatologic vascular disorder in which blood vessels in the center of the face swell to form a butterfly pattern.  Affecting approximately 14 million Americans, it usually worsens unless properly treated, causing many to suffer needlessly, either not knowing they suffer from the condition or unaware that effective treatments exist.

Rosacea normally appears between the ages of 30 and 50, and common symptoms include:

  • Redness and inflammation on the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin

  • Small, inflamed blood vessels visible on the face

  • Numerous tiny pimples or bumps across the face

  • Red, watery, and irritated eyes

  • The constant feeling that the skin has a mild sunburn

  • Rosacea lowers self-confidence, is embarrassing, and can affect every aspect of someone’s life.

What causes Rosacea?

Many theories exist, but the causes of Rosacea are still unknown.  While some think it is hereditary, others propose it is due to a bacterial infection or parasite.

What can you do about Rosacea?

If you suffer from Rosacea or think you may have the condition, see an esthetician or dermatologist for an official diagnosis.  A skin expert will also be able to prescribe or recommend treatment regimens that soothe flare-ups and prevent future Rosacea breakouts.

Also, keep in mind that balanced skin is healthy skin, and healthy skin is less susceptible to Rosacea.  Although Softtbeauty Skincare does not offer any specific Rosacea treatments, it does offer a full line or products designed to balance your skin for a healthier complexion.  For example, Softtbeauty Hyaluronic Acid Serum nourishes the skin with a rich dose of moisture.  Softtbeauty Multi-Active Night Creme conditions the skin for increased resilience and a more vibrant appearance.  Products such as these reduce the potential for Rosacea flare-ups.
